Tension/Gauge?

I have to let you know...I was anxiously watching Hurricane Gustav (and praying it didn't devastate New Orleans). So I cast on for a hurricane hat to ease the stress. I'm not finished yet, but I love this pattern. It's easy enough to be mindless and the rhythym of the pattern is calming. And it looks great so far. Thank you for sharing your pattern!

hi Criquette,

thanks for your post about hurricane Gustav. It is really interesting, because Hurricanes can be beautiful, from afar, but they are so devestating as well. Now will Hannah & Ike to worry about, it is nice to have simple mindless patterns to work on! I know i've been working on a lot of simple garter stitch & ribbed projects as of late!

Hi, I love this pattern. I'm kind of new to knitting and don't know all the terms. What is the knitted cast-on method...is it long-tail cast-on that makes the first knit row?

andrea said...

hi Froggypants, I hope you check back and see this: here is a you tube video of the knitted cast on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nJKC2xT0Q4

it is very simple and gives a comfy, non-stretchy, open brim (which i prefer - great for preventing hat head)

if you want a more stretch cast on, i prefer the long-tail method, which you will find here:

You Tube is great for learning all things knitting related.. you can even learn the "hard stuff" like intarsia & two handed fair isle!!

cheers,

Andrea

This was a great pattern for my first attempt at using DPNs & my first hat. The bottom came out wonky- I'm really still learning, but it was great seeing the pattern come together towards the top as I got the hang of things. I used a moderately crappy acrylic worsted wt (Caron 1-lb no dye lot) and four size 8 DPNs.

This reminds me alot of the Noro Spiral hat. Actually a little easier.

just made my first hat ever with this one for my toddler girl, then had to make another for toddler boy. Now I want one, too. Is it too geeky for the whole family to have matching hats......? This pattern is calming, as another poster said, thanks for sharing. (and fueling my new found addiction!!!)

I just starting casting on and am finding the 81 stitch beginning point to be very tight on the circular needle. Any chance I'm doing something wrong?

andrea said...

hi Anonymous, you probably aren't using a 16" circular. i added that to the pattern. best luck.

Hi there,

I love this pattern! I'm making one of these right now in Kilcarra Aran Tweed for a friend's birthday.

Just wondering (I'm too dull of brain to work this out) - what does the multiple have to be - is it a multiple of 10 plus 1 ? Just because I'm thinking of adapting it into a slouchy hat pattern, and am wondering what my ultimate multiple would need to be. Thanks!

It was extremely interesting for me to read the blog. Thank author for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to them. I would like to read a bit more soon.

Lucy i think its 9 + 1 for the pattern. i'm looking at knitting one of these but i don't have true 10ply in the house. and i have a fat head.

I must be brain dead but I don't understand "At the end of
final row, M1 stitch. Total 81sts" what does M1 stitch mean?
